8K Is Cooling Off, Not Heating Up

A few years ago, 8K looked like the obvious “next big thing.” That hasn’t panned out. Major brands including TCL, Sony, and even LG have scaled back their 8K lineups, leaving Samsung as nearly the only major player still pushing the format. The core problem hasn’t changed: there’s almost no native 8K content to watch, the panels are expensive, and most people can’t tell the difference from a good seat on the couch.   • RGB Mini-LED is emerging as OLED’s biggest challenger, using tiny, densely packed LED backlights for exceptional brightness and contrast without the organic materials that cause burn-in. It’s currently pricey, but costs are expected to drop through 2026 and 2027 as more brands adopt it.
  • MicroLED, often considered the “ultimate” display tech, combines OLED-like perfect blacks with LED-level brightness and no burn-in risk at all. The catch is manufacturing cost — it may take until the end of 2027 or later before MicroLED sets become realistic options for everyday buyers rather than luxury showpieces.

Smarter HDR, Not Just Brighter Screens

New HDR standards like Dolby Vision 2 and HDR10+ Advanced are arriving to fix a long-standing complaint: HDR content that looks great on one TV can look murky or washed out on another. These upgrades focus on smarter tone mapping and motion handling so that HDR content looks consistently good across budget and premium sets alike — a subtle but meaningful shift toward consistency over raw specs.

AI Is Becoming Part of the Picture

TVs are increasingly using on-device AI to upscale content, adjust picture settings in real time based on what’s on screen, and fine-tune motion smoothing automatically. Expect this to become a standard selling point rather than a premium extra by 2027.
