HBO’s Bob Zitter Believes that 4K TVs Will Fail

4K TVHBO’s important figure, Bob Zitter, recently revealed his true opinion about the fledgling 4k technology. He is skeptical that consumers will purchase 4k TV sets in sufficient numbers. Not only these TVs are prohibitively expensive for many buyers, measuring at above 55”, few people will have enough space in their living room to fit one.

Major content broadcasters, including HBO, are currently reluctant to deliver 4k programming unless many people already have 4k TV sets. He also argues that 3D TV sets are dead, especially those requiring special glasses. Eventually, consumers will find 3D glass an impediment, which negatively affects their experience.

World’s First 4k Channel is Released in Europe

4k Channel ReleaseA French-based satellite provider has just started the broadcast of the world’s first 4k channel. The Ultra HD or 4k offers four times the resolution of typical HD broadcasts and while 4k TV models are making headlines, there’s still very little real 4k content to speak of. A common solution is by upconverting or upscaling 1080p videos. Eutelsat claimed that broadcasting its 4k content doesn’t require significant modifications to their existing system.

The company is planning to rollout full-length 4k content soon by using a new kind of compression standard. Previously, Sony has announced plans to convert some movie titles through its subsidiary, the Sony Pictures. It should be noted that users won’t see much difference when viewing 4k technology on smaller screen and TV sets larger than 50” are needed.

4k Technology Will Enter The Gaming Industry

4k Technology in Gaming IndustryGamers can be more demanding than movie enthusiasts. Pixelation may start to occur when playing typical game titles on high definition TVs larger than 60 inches. In theory, 4k TVs can ameliorate this problems by cramming significantly more pixels into the display. Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 output games at 720p and while they will looks bigger on the 4k TVs, users need to deal with interpolative pitfalls and this should be expected when using much lower resolution content on high resolution TVs.

A transition from 720p to 4k, requires about eightfold increase and there’s no upscaling technology that can sufficiently compensate for this kind of disparity. Fortunately, the upcoming Playstation 4k will change that when released in February 20.
